Although these islands are quite close to Argentina and Antarctica, the Falklands are British. With the peat fires burning in every hearth and teatimes to set your clock by the islands only have a scattering of inhabitants (half of whom are British military personnel), so you won´t exactly feel like you are in a touristy destination, the reverse in fact!

The greatest attraction of these remote islands, other than being very remote and unusual, is the wealth of marine animals and seabirds living among the cliffs and along the windswept beaches. There is also the intriguing human history here, strongly linked to the sea, with a war in recent history, and evidenced by several shipwrecks dotted around Stanley Harbor.

Combining Argentina or Chile with this visit is an obvious choice as you are so close, but maybe don’t mention to the Argentines that you visited!
